About portfolio websites
What is a portfolio website?
A small website that shows your best work, says who you are and makes it easy to get in touch. Unlike a social media profile, you choose what's on it, in what order, and how it looks, and it lives at an address you can put on a business card.
What makes a good portfolio website?
The work is on the first screen, it shows a selection rather than everything, images are large and sharp, every piece has a title, it works well on a phone and there's a contact link on every page. Design matters far less than editing.
How many pieces should a portfolio have?
Usually 10 to 20 strong pieces, or a few series of them. Visitors judge you by the weakest thing they see, so a shorter portfolio of excellent work beats a long one of mixed quality.
Does a portfolio have to be a website?
No, some applications ask for a PDF and interviews may want prints. But a website is the one people can find and share without asking you, and it's easy to keep up to date. Most artists use a website and send a PDF when an application asks for one; Semirare makes that PDF from the same works.
Where should I host my portfolio website?
Somewhere built for showing visual work, that lets you use your own domain and lets you take your files with you if you leave. A general website builder works too, but you'll spend more time on layout and less on the work.
